The Bar Harbor Airport
For Those Who Want to Fly to Acadia
The Bar Harbor Airport, or more correctly, the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, is available for those who want to fly into the Acadia and Bar Harbor area.
Getting a flight to Bar Harbor is no big deal, or at least a flight near Bar Harbor. There's actually no airport located right in Bar Harbor, or even anywhere on Mt. Desert Island itself.
But that doesn't mean you can't fly to Acadia National Park area. You can... basically, there are 3 options. The first one is quite local...
Hancock County - Bar Harbor Airport
There is a small airport located just off the island (and 10 miles from the Bar Harbor town center) where Acadia is located. It's actually located on State Route 3 in the town of Trenton and is right near the bridge that crosses the Mt. Desert Narrows channel over to Mt. Desert Island.
So it's very close by anywhere you might be staying in and around Acadia National Park.
US Airways is the only airline flying into this airport, but it offers direct flights from Boston's Logan Airport to the Bar Harbor-Hancock County Airport.
During the main tourist season (the end of June through Columbus Day), the park shuttle, called Island Explorer, runs buses from the Bar Harbor airport to area hotels and campgrounds.
Other Services at the Bar Harbor Airport
Besides being able to fly into and out of this Hancock County/Bar Harbor airport, you can also take scenic flights from it, including glider flights, open cockpit biplanes and even a WWII era fighter plane!
Other Options
Of course, you can get a number of airlines to fly you into the Bangor International Airport as well. In fact, the following airlines offer nonstop flights to Bangor from the noted destinations:
Atlanta (Delta)
Boston (Delta, American)
New York City LaGuardia (American, US Airways)
Philadelphia (USAirways)
Cincinnati (Delta)
Detroit (Northwest)
Newark (Continental Express)
Minneapolis/Seasonal (Northwest)
From Bangor, you would need to take a bus (see above) or rent a car or taxi to get to Bar Harbor/Acadia.
Or, if you're up for a long drive, you could just fly into Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts, and rent a car to get to Bar Harbor. Chances are, the flights into Logan will be a lot cheaper than those into either Bangor or the Hancock County Airport, so it still might be a cheaper option.
