Bar Harbor Bus Service...
Does It Exist?
There is no Bar Harbor bus service per se, but you CAN take a bus to Bar Harbor, if you really want to.
Most bus lines or Amtrak go from any part of the country to Boston. From Boston, bus service to Bangor is available year-round via Concord Coachlines and Vermont Transit (via Greyhound).
I'm not sure you have a ton of options on these buses... there may only be one that runs per day, so be sure you plan accordingly, or you could be disappointed if your plan includes bus travel.
Reservations are not necessary, but DO allow plenty of time for buying tickets and getting on the bus.
Getting to Acadia on the Bus from Bangor
Vermont Transit/Greyhound also operates between Bangor and Bar Harbor during the summer months. (I guess, during the fall, winter and spring, you may have to rent a car to get from Bangor to the coastal area near Bar Harbor, though.)
Here's some great news though... from June 23 to early October, fare-free Island Explorer buses operate throughout Mount Desert Island.
The Island Explorer line links park destinations to neighboring villages, motels, and campgrounds, as well as to the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, which is actually located just off Mount Desert Island in the small town of Trenton.
So, you see Bar Harbor bus service of a sorts does exist, if you're willing to get a bit creative.
