Bar Harbor Maine Cottages & Acadia Cabins
When Privacy Matters
Bar Harbor Maine cottages and Acadia cabins can offer yet another lodging alternative, especially if you crave privacy.
The island of Mount Desert has tons of charming Bar Harbor cottages available, seemingly almost everywhere you look. If I ever decide to stop camping when I go to Acadia, it might be one of these adorable cottages or cabins that I choose to stay in.
A note about the term "cottage"... When you visit Acadia, you're going to find that the term is used quite liberally, to mean a lot of different things. In days of yesteryear, wealthy vacationers called their summer vacation homes (which often had 100 rooms!) cottages.
Many of the bed and breakfast inns around the island also bear the name "cottage." Some are modest former homes, while others are closer to the mansions of the 1800s. But on this page, we're using the term cottage synonymously with the term cabin, to mean small (sometimes tiny), usually 1 or 2 room structures.
Why Stay in a Bar Harbor Cottage or Cabin?
These things are tiny, folks! Most of the cottages and cabins you find here on Mount Desert Island are 1- or 2-room affairs, and you might have to eat outside. So are they basically like camping?
We'd have to say no, they're a definite step up from camping, at least tent camping. After all, you have 4 structural walls and a roof... and usually heat, A/C and electricity when needed. Oh, and a private bath of some sort.
But aside from that, you also have intimacy and romance, so a cottage makes a great spot for Acadia honeymooners or any couple wanting a romantic retreat. And they're often more private than other types of lodging, especially when the cottages are scattered throughout an estate, rather than being in rows on top of each other.
Things to Look for in Cottages & Cabins
As with most lodging, much of your decision-making process will be intensely personal. I can't tell you what the most important factors are for YOU.
But here are a few things to think about:
Size... Expect them to be small, but even so, how much space do you need to escape feeling claustrophobic? Is some attached outdoor space the remedy? Do you need a sitting area in addition to sleeping space? Want a kitchen?
Location... How close to the park do you want to be (or to Bar Harbor itself)? Do you prefer to be on the ocean or Frenchman's Bay? Is view important? Is ease of access?
Pricing... Costs can vary, so know what your ultimate budget it and what you might be willing to pay extra for? Do you prefer to get some kind of discount, such as AARP?
Amenities... Which ones do you need... WIFI, a pool, picnic tables, grills, kayaks for rental, etc.?
Those are just a few things to get you thinking. You'll probably come up with a few more if you put your mind to it.
