Jordan Pond House Restaurant Review

by John
(Portland, ME)

Relaxing After a Big Meal at Jordan Pond House

Relaxing After a Big Meal at Jordan Pond House

The Jordan Pond House is the perfect lunch for any tourist stop to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. Located on the banks of the Jordan Pond, on the Jordan Pond Road, it is the epitome of summer in Maine. You can either eat in the restaurant or out on the front lawn, overlooking the pond and Bubble Rock. I would strongly recommend, weather permitting, sitting at one of the outdoor tables.

The Jordan Pond House is famous for their popovers and strawberry jam. The popovers are served warm and go perfectly paired with their lobster stew or seafood chowder. If seafood isn't for you, then I would strongly recommend one of their always fresh salads.

Beware of the bees! The one drawback to all of that delicious strawberry jam is the many bees that are drawn to it. If you are able to ignore all the buzzing, it is the perfect light lunch and has the best views of one of the most beautiful national parks in the country.

The best part is if you eat too much you can always hike the trail around the pond to burn off any extra calories. The trail around the pond takes about 2 hours to hike and is relatively flat the whole way around.

The Jordan Pond House is truly a magical place that brings back the history of the summer vacation in Maine. I love this restaurant and visit it at least once a year. It is not just a place to get lunch... it is a destination in itself.

Dogs in Restaurants
by: Anonymous

First, Jordan Pond House allows dogs only when one is seated at one of the outdoor tables. I go there at least once a year, and the dogs make a delightful addition to the outdoor dining.

Second, pets may not be allowed in American restaurants, but I have been in several quite decent European restaurants in several countries where dogs are quite welcome inside. I once ate at a cafe (indoors) in Vienna when someone at a neighboring table had a white mouse running around her neck for much of the meal. (Can't say I was thrilled over that one, but no one else seemed to mind.)

I once ate dinner in a lovely French village inn with the family dog sitting in a chair at the table for the entire meal. Several times in lovely cafes in Berlin, Cologne, etc. And once in the Puerto Rican countryside with roosters and hens wandering about--again, indoors, though, obviously, not Europe. None of these places seemed to lack class.

How dare you not accommodate my dog- ugh
by: Anonymous

To the previous reviewer. Since when is it acceptable to bring a dog to a restaurant? Have some class, please. Be considerate of people who want to go to a restaurant, not a kennel for lunch. You want to bring an animal? Go on a picnic or better yet stay in your own yard with your dog and eat there.

Rude people
by: Anonymous

My family and I had reservations to have lunch with our dog here. We were extremely disappointed when they told us they were not seating outside on a beautiful sunny day. When I asked about my dog I was told “just tie him to a tree” I was uncomfortable doing so and decided not to have lunch there. The hostess and manager were dismissive and rude, the manager even had a few rude comments to add!

Huge Disappointment
by: Anonymous

My friends and I looked forward to dining at Jordan Pond House--it was referred to us by several people. We were extremely saddened by the rudeness of the host and by the waiter's lack of attention throughout our entire meal. There was one busboy who was very good. The popovers were delicious, but the remainder of the meal was mediocre. Vodka tonics were good, but the margarita was undrinkable. This restaurant does not deserve 5 stars by any stretch of the imagination.

We Love Jordan Pond House Too
by: Kathi

I have to concur with this Jordan Pond House review. We have popovers on the lawn on every visit... it's tradition for us. But we've also eaten in the restaurant and it's delicious. Dog-friendly too, if that's a consideration...
