Mount Desert Campground

One of the Most Beautiful Acadia Campgrounds

Mount Desert Campground is one of the oldest Acadia campgrounds, having offered Bar Harbor camping for tenters for 50 years.

Mount Desert Campground CampsiteThis small campground right at the head of beautiful Somes Sound, near Somesville offers beautiful wooded sites and caters to tent campers and RV'ers with RVs up to 20 feet.

We'd have to call this campground a well-kept secret, even though it is on the main road, because it's a bit off the beaten paths right around Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. However, it's only 8 miles to Bar Harbor and slightly less to the park, so you can see it's not all that far off the beaten track.

Amenities

  • Wooden tent platforms
  • Metered hot showers
  • Canoe/kayak rentals
  • Campstore/snack bar on premises
  • Salt water fishing and swimming
  • Ice, Wood and Groceries
  • Fire Rings & Picnic Tables
  • Electric & water on some sites
  • Free WIFI on the grounds
  • Island Explorer shuttle stops here
  • Reservations accepted

So, as you can see, the Mount Desert Island has much to offer. It's not right for everyone, but if crave quiet and beauty and you camp in either a tent or tent trailer, this may be the one you choose from all of the Acadia campgrounds!

If you have stayed at either this campground or any other on the island (or near the island), would you help out other visitors to this site by writing a short review of it? I know we'll all appreciate you!

If you haven't visited yet, then you might enjoy reading Matt's review of Mt. Desert Campground...
